A County Durham farmers’ market has been crowned best in the UK at a prestigious Farm Retail Awards.

Barnard Castle Farmers’ Market was the winner of Farmers’ Market of the Year at the Farm Retail Awards, organised by the Farm Retail Association (FRA).

The awards first began 45 years ago and celebrate “the cream of the crop” in the industry.

They also showcase an “incredible array of farm retailers from the length and breadth of the UK,” writes the FRA website.

It adds: “They are the only awards judged by fellow farm retailers and celebrate the best farm shops, farm cafés and restaurants, farmers’ markets and trade suppliers in the country.”

The 2024 ceremony was presented by Derbyshire Dairy Farmer and after-dinner speaker Peter Slack.

It took place at the Holiday Inn, Peterborough West, as part of the FRA’s Stronger Together event.

Barnard Castle Farmers' Market named best of the year

Barnard Castle Farmers’ Market features a wide range of artisan food and crafts from all over the region.

The website explains: “Our meat and vegetable produce is naturally or organically grown, with meats raised humanely on pastures. Our cheese stalls offer a wide range of delicious handmade cheese.

“You’ll also find free range eggs and poultry, homemade award-winning jellies and jams, not to mention, our famous fudge, game and fish, spicy sauces and lots more.”

On Google reviews, one person commented: “I always come away with a wonderful selection of meats, cheese, bread and drinks. Very well-organised.”

Another added: “Great little Farmers Market supplementing the many smaller shops in the area.  Good prices and friendly stallholders.”

You can find the farmers’ market outdoors in Barnard Castle on the first Saturday of every month.
