FROM OUR ARCHIVE: Whorlton Lido, seen here on a busy summer afternoon in 1991, was on the south bank of the River Tees at Whorlton, near Barnard Castle. The Lido was a popular summer outing for families from Darlington, Bishop Auckland and elsewhere. There was space for picnics, a miniature railway and safe bathing in the river. It closed in 2011.
