A woman from Darlington and a man from Redcar have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a man suffered multiple stab wounds.
The alleged attack took place in the early house of Sunday morning in Grangetown and the victim remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital.
Birchington Avenue was cordoned off by police and forensic crime scene investigators searched the area for evidence.
A spokesperson for Cleveland Police said: "Two people have been arrested in connection with the incident in Grangetown on March 31.
"The incident happened at 12.30am in Birchington Avenue when a man sustained stab wounds and was taken to James Cook Hospital.
"The victim remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital.
"A 20-year-old woman from Darlington and a 21-year-old man from Redcar have both been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
"They remain in custody while enquiries continue."
Any witnesses who have not yet come forward is asked to contact the police on 101, quoting reference number 057897.
