Mildred Dorothy DURNE
DURNE Mildred Dorothy (1932-2022) Mildred Dorothy Durne of Kirkby Fleetham was born on 15th February, 1932 in Hammersmith, London and passed away on 3rd of August in Friarage Hospital, Northallerton, North Yorkshire at the age of 90, from complications of cancer. Mildred had a distinguished career with the Bank of Australia, in the area of international travel. A three-time Olympian (1964 was her first Olympiad) for Great Britain in women's fencing and in 1981 she won a silver medal. She described her love for the sport as being mainly about "style and attitude", traits she had plenty of. Her tenaciousness and zeal for life was apparent in other ventures as well. She and her late partner, Sheila Ward, started the Glade Trust as an independent nature reserve based at Kirkby Fleetham Hall in North Yorkshire. Mildred was pre-deceased by parents, Frank and Dorothy Durne of London, two brothers, Ronald Frank Durne (a WWII pilot killed over France, 1943) and Leonard Philip Durne (2012). She is survived by a nephew Christopher Philip Durne (London/McLean), sister-in-law Daphne Jill Durne (London) and several grand nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be private with a later "celebration of life" with family and friends.

Mildred Durne was in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics GB fencing team with my mother, Mary Ann Watts-Tobin. I just scanned some slides, and Mary Ann identified Mildred. She is next to my mother at the Olympic village in one photo, an is wearing the pink Opening Ceremony uniform in the other two.
