THE Bishop of Leeds and Ripon officiated at a celebration of 100 years of a Mothers’ Union branch in the Dales.

The MU branch in the village of Spennithorne has been meeting since 1912. It was formed with 18 members with the adjacent village of Harmby becoming incorporated shortly afterwards. Now, 100 years later, it still has an active membership.

A service to celebrate the landmark was held in the Church of St Michael and All Angels.

Conducted by the former vicar of Spennithorne, the Reverend Don Tordoff, the sermon was given by the Right Reverend John Packer, Bishop of Ripon and Leeds.

The branch has its own banner made by the Royal College of Needlework in London. It was designed and later presented to the branch by Ruth Rogers, of Spennithorne, during the 1940s. Christine Thorpe and her husband, Colin, are currently conducting research into the history of the branch.

Many past and present members along with their partners attended the centenary celebrations. However, the longestserving member, Mrs Ursula Jackson, of Spennithorne, who has been with her local branch for 51 years was unable to attend the service.

Commenting on their anniversary, Mr Packer said: “It is a wonderful achievement. The Mothers’ Union is a jewel in the Church’s crown. I hope they continue for a further 100 years, as they are a very lively group.”

Afterwards the guests enjoyed buffet lunch served in the church and a special cake made for the occasion by Rita Terry and Madge Carlisle.

Branch president Mrs Thorpe said: “We are all such great friends, today was a special day.”
