PIANO greats from Schumann, Debussy, Ravel and Stravinskyare played by Alexander Panfilov, a 23-year-old born in Moscow, who studied at the Gnessin Music School and the Moscow Conservatory. At present he is on on a full scholarship at the RNCM Manchester studying with Graham Scott. He has won a raft of first prizes in competitions throughout the world, and appeared in top venues including the Moscow Conservatory, Carnegie Concert Hall, New York, the Vienna Musikverein and the Mozarteum in Salzburg. Ruby Turner, Harrogate Theatre, on Saturday, 8pm
FOR many years Ruby Turner has been regarded as having one of the greatest voices the UK has ever produced. Born in Jamaica, Ruby moved to England when she was nine and her major break came when she was taken under the wings of British blues legend, the late Alexis Korner. A very prolific songwriter, many of Ruby’s songs have been covered by artistes such as Lulu, Yazz and Maxi Priest, while her vocal prowess has been employed to good effect by Brian Ferry, Mick Jagger, Steve Winwood, and Jools Holland. EIGHT cellos and a soprano? Can one ever have too many cellos? This group of eight cellists performs both the standard cello ensemble repertoire and a diverse array of specially commissioned arrangements and adaptations. This concert includes, among others, Heitor Villa-Lobos’ own arrangement of Bachianas Brasileiras for eight cellos, and Rachmaninov’s lovely Vocalise, with soprano Jen Witton.

SUITABLE for families with young children, there will be a whole host of hands on activities and workshops based on a spring, new life and rural theme. Topping the timetable is television’s Mr Bloom from CBeebies’ Mr Bloom’s Garden, whose aim is to enthuse children about gardening and nature fits well with the event’s ethos. Also new will be the opportunity to try a form of tightrope walking, courtesy of The Slackline Company. There will also be farm animals, lots of activities – from rug making to dry stone walling, and from mountain biking to bread making.
