TO celebrate her appointment as a regional science ambassador, a Leyburn youth worker has launched a bat-themed project.
Every year, the British Science Association recruits 12 individuals, all previous recipients of a British Science Week Community Grant, to become its regional ambassadors. Rachael Addison, youth project officer for Leyburn Arts and Community Centre, has been chosen to represent the North-East.
To celebrate her appointment, she has launched a long-term science project “Bat to the Future” at the centre. Supported by North Yorkshire Youth, the Bat Conservation Trust and Ignite Yorkshire, it aims to provide opportunities for young people to discover biodiversity and to take action in their local area.
From now until October 31, anyone who is under the age of 26 or families containing a person under 26 can hire bat detector kits free of charge which will help them explore and discover the bats living near them.
In September, Leyburn Arts & Community Centre Youth Project will also run three nocturnal-themed evening sessions with Wild with Nature. These will take place in their garden and are free to all 11 to 16 year olds.
Ms Addison, said: “I am so excited about the Bat to the Future project here at The Old School House.
“I wanted to create interesting ways for young people to connect with nature, after all how can you care or take action for something that you have not had the opportunity to experience?
“I hope young people and their families enjoy the project and feel inspired to learn more.”
