ROTARIANS turned out in force to wage war on litter as part of the Great British Spring Clean.
Three groups from Northallerton Mowbray Rotary Club put the sparkle back into streets and industrial estates by collecting 30 bags of litter in just 90 minutes.
They jumped into action after being inspired by a talk from the Wombles of Hambleton about the group's efforts to improve the environment by collecting hundreds of tonnes of discarded rubbish every year.
“We really support what the Wombles are doing and decided to arrange our own litter-picking effort,” said Ian Parminter, who heads the club’s community and vocational committee.
“We assembled a group of 14, including two new members, to cover Bullamoor Road, Turker Lane and the Standard Way and Thurston Road industrial estates in Northallerton, as well as the Leeming Bar industrial estate.
“It was a great team effort and very satisfying to do our bit for the Great British Spring Clean.”
The club spent £100 on litter-picking equipment, which they later donated to the Wombles. It will remain available should Rotarians decide to stage future collections.
