IT has been a busy couple of weeks for Richmond and Zetland Harriers – especially for the junior members.

North Yorkshire Schools Championships Athletic Event took place at York University Track on June 13.

Sam Archer, U17 Intermediate boys 100m hurdles finished fifth in 21:1, Shannon Robinson, U17 Intermediate girls 800m, finished third in 2:19:7 (PB), Tom O'Mahoney, U17 Intermediate boys 1500m finished third in 4:31:5, Charlie Stephenson, U20 Senior boys 3000m, finished second in 9:09:1. Two days later, Shannon Robinson continued her PB streak when she raced in the 1500m (U17) at the Trafford Grand Prix, finishing seventh in 4:45:53 (PB).

A week later and the juniors were back out competing at Shildon for the second meet of the North East Youth Development League (NEDYL) on June 20. There was great team spirit amongst the talented athletes and coaches. On the track there were entries across many events. In the U13 groups Harriers had Charlotte Emison running the 100m in 15.9s and the 200m in 33.6s. Charlotte Jackson-Bowers took part in the 800m, finishing in a time of 3:11.5, before attempting the 70m hurdles in a great time of 16.9s. Matilda Ellis also run the 800m and finished first in the U13s with a time of 2:42.0 (PB). Matilda then ran in the 200m with a time of 33.3s.

For the boys, U15s Sam Archer and Lincon Newall both ran in the 100m events in times of 14.1s and 14.4s respectively. Sam Archer took to the track again for the 200m finishing in his group with a time of 29.7s and he was joined by Jack Vasey this time who ran 32.3s in his group race. For the 300m event, Harriers had Thomas Carter with a time of 47.1s and Ollie Rogerson, who ran 49.6s. Thomas Carter went on to run the 800m race in 2:31.6, with Jack Vasey also running 2:42.4. The U15 1500m event had the two Ollies running for Richmond, with Ollie Middleton running a time of 5:19.7 (PB) and Ollie Rogerson finishing his group race in a time of 5:20.0. Sam Archer competed in the U15 80m hurdles and finished in a time of 16.3s.

In the girls U15s, Phoebe Haw has just gone up into the next age category and did the 100m, finishing in 16:1s and then also ran the 300m, finishing in 52.7s. Olivia Jackson-Bowers competed in the 200m, finishing in 34.2s, together with the 800m running a time of 2:50.9. The U15 Harriers boys also took part in the 4x100m relay event, finishing with a time of 56.70s. In the U17s category, Tom O'Mahoney ran for the boys in the 800m, finishing first with a time of 2:14:5 and Alana Teasdale finished first in the girls race with a time of 4:47:3 (PB).

Further impressive performances were had at the field events. For the U13 girls, Charlotte Emison and Matilda Ellis took part in the long jump and jumped distances of 2.71m and 2.34m respectively. In the Javelin event Charlotte Jackson-Bowers threw 8.85m. In the U15 boys long jump, Thomas Carter jumped 3.87m with Jack Vasey reaching a distance of 3.83m in his group.

It was a day of PBs for Ollie Middleton, who came second in the U15 4kg shot put with a throw of 7.9m (PB) and a second place in the U15 javelin, throwing a distance of 17.36m (PB). Lincon Newall also competed in the U15 javelin, throwing 15.9m, before throwing a distance of 14.8m in the 1.25kg discus, taking second place. Ollie Rogerson competed in the second 1.25kg discus group and threw 9.8m. In the girls, U15 Phoebe Haw and Olivia Jackson-Bowers competed in the long jump with Pheobe jumping 2.72m and Olivia 2.66m. Finally on the field and in the older U17 category Tom O’Mahoney and Alana Teasdale both competed in the javelin and Tom threw 14.81m for the boys and Alana 8.56m for the girls. Tom also entered the 5kg shot put and achieved a distance of 5.24m.

Onto the seniors and Paul Ellis had a successful day at the Hardmoors Whitehorse Half marathon (16.5 miles) on June 12. The circular route, which starts from Sutton Bank visitor centre, saw Paul finish ninth overall and first in age category in 2hrs 9mins. Paul was back out racing a shorter distance the same week on June 18 at York Even Splits 5k. It appeared Paul had recovered well from his earlier race as he achieved a PB finishing 74th and third in his age category in 19:16 (PB). Nicola Simpson had a successful race also, finishing 107th and second in age category in 20:31 (PB).

The NEMAA Track & Field Championships was held at Monkton Stadium in Jarrow on June 19 and Pauline Whittaker had a fabulous day when she won three gold and three silver medals. The six events Pauline took part in were long jump (3.28m), shot put (5.77m), javelin (15.66m), 200m (33.9secs), 400m (80.3secs) and 800m (3m03secs).

Kim Reeve headed to Leeds for the midweek Otley ten-miler race on June 23. Kim had a great race on the testing course, finishing 86th overall and fourth in age category in 80m55s.
