Sarah Garbutt, who fashions beautiful clothing and accessories from Yorkshire tweed, talks to Jenny Needham

A COUNTRY girl at heart, Sarah Garbutt loves to combine two of her passions in life, sewing with beautiful Yorkshire-woven wool tweed, and a love for the lifestyle on the family farm in North Yorkshire. The 30-year-old has a studio at the beef and arable farm where she grew up, and it's here that she designs and makes her tweed clothing and accessories, popping on her wellies to help out on the farm whenever she's needed. "I am lucky to have a studio so near to my own home in East Cowton," she says. "I gain so much inspiration from the surrounding countryside."

Sarah started the business in 2012 after graduating with a degree in fashion design. For her final collection, she created a collection of evening dresses made from woven tweed, and was left with many offcuts, which she decided to use to make her first accessories. The business has grown from there, with Sarah expanding her collection to include lifestyle items, as well as offering the occasional bespoke pieces.

Sarah is inspired by the fabulous materials woven in her home county. "I started designing and making my tweed collections after finishing university in Sheffield, so this September will be my tenth year in business," she says. "Using a fabric woven in Yorkshire gives me enormous pride, and the history of the mills gives me a sense of continuation of a great industry. I love getting to travel to iconic country shows, where I can talk about the amazing quality of the tweeds our Yorkshire mills produce."

Sarah's own preferred style is country casual. "I love classic pieces that don’t date, but rather transform an outfit," she explains. For working in her studio, she's a jeans and t-shirt kind of girl, using tweed accessories to transform an outfit for an occasion, while on the farm you’re more than likely to come across her in wellies and overalls with a tweed headband to keep her ears warm.

"Going out, my go-to piece has to be one of my herringbone tweed skirts, a classic that can be dressed up or dressed down for many occasions," she says. "I love pairing them with long boots and a crisp shirt. I am currently in the process of designing a new dress that will be available later this year to mark my ten years in business."

Sarah loves heading out for walks in the surrounding countryside with her ten-month-old border collie and feels blessed to live in such a beautiful part of England. "I love the people of Yorkshire and am always happy to promote the county and our tweed manufacturers. But the biggest accolade is seeing my clothing and accessories being worn and enjoyed."

THE FAB FOUR FOR SPRING!

Headband – Perfect for task work, or for bringing a bit of colour and flair to a country outfit.

Skirt – Taking you to the beer gardens this spring. Pair with boots and bare legs if you're feeling brave. Alternatively pop on some tights and a brightly coloured jumper.

Classic snood – We have been having some rather chilly mornings so I've found a snood perfect for when I'm dashing about. That extra layer makes all the difference.

Scrunchie – Spring can be months of mixed weather. It can be pretty blustery, too, so reach for a scrunchie to avoid the drama of hair flapping around in your face.
