A HOST of May Day entertainment was in store for visitors to Richmond over the bank holiday weekend.
The town took inspiration from its rich history to stage a three-day extravaganza of street entertainment, concerts, music and maypole dancing at its first ever MayFest.
Concerts included the GreenMatthews performing ‘A Brief History of Music’ at St Mary’s Church which took audiences on a journey through 600-years of muscial history.
The Richmondshire Choral Society and guest singers also performed at St Mary's including Richmond’s own ‘Cantique 950’, composed for the 950th anniversary of the town's castle last year.
Other entertainment taking place across the weekend included folk sessions, morris dancing and a chance to learn the bagpipes with a beginners’ taster session.
On the Saturday and Sunday Hautbois gaveperformances of Great War Music and jester, Tom Fool, entertained visitors throughout the festival.
Meanwhile, the Durham-based Ran Tanners returned to Richmond to play Georgian and Victorian music in and around the Market Place and the Station.
MayFest was formed as a legacy from the 950 Years of Music event held last year as part of Celebrate Richmond 950 and it is hoped that this new event will become a permanent feature of Richmond’s calendar.
