Two North East MPs have now been appointed senior ministers by Britain’s new Prime Minister Liz Truss.

As Liz Truss made her first speech as PM outside Downing Street yesterday, promising the nation that we shall “ride out the storm” as she prepares a multibillion-pound package to help with soaring energy costs.

Boris Johnson pledged “fervent support” for his successor during his final speech as Prime Minister.

The two North East senior ministers are Simon Clarke and Anne-Marie Trevelyan.

As part of the new government, Ms Truss appointed Simon Clarke, MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, as Sectretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.

Mr Clarke tweeted he will “give it my all” after his appointment.

“It’s a huge honour to be appointed Secretary of State," he said.

“Delivering on Levelling Up for communities in all parts of our country, unlocking the homes we need and supporting the economic growth that is so central to @trussliz’s Government is our mission – will give it my all.

“This is a Department that I know really well, and which I am so looking forward to returning to – the commitment and expertise of officials there on themes as diverse as homelessness, building safety and devolution is second to none.”

He was appointed previously appointed Chief Secretary to the Treasury from 15 September 2021 to 6 September 2022.

Simon Clarke was previously appointed Minister of State at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government on 13 February 2020.

He was previously Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury from 27 July 2019 to 13 February 2020.

Anne-Marie Trevelyan

Anne-Marie Trevelyan, MP for Berwick-upon-Tweed, has been made Secretary of State for Transport.

In a tweet, Ms Trevelyan said: “thrilled to have been appointed Transport Sec.”

She was Secretary of State for International Trade and President of the Board of Trade from 15 September 2021 to 6 September 2022.

Previously Anne-Marie was the UK International Champion on Adaptation and Resilience for the COP26 Presidency between 7 November 2020 and 6 September 2022.

She was Minister of State (Minister for Energy, Clean Growth and Climate Change) at the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy from January 2021 to September 2021.

She was the Secretary of State for International Development from February to September 2020. She was Minister of State for the Armed Forces from 17 December 2019 to 13 February 2020, and Minister for Defence Procurement from 27 July 2019 to 16 December 2019.
