PLATFORM, the classical music organisation for Tees Valley, celebrates local musical talent with a concert tomorrow for Tall Trees bursary winners' and by running masterclasses for brass bands.

Six young musicians from the area will perform in the chapel at Sir William Turner's Almshouses, Kirkleatham, near Redcar, tomorrow evening (7.30pm). They include three singers: Jonathan Ainscough (bass), Penelope Appleyard and Sanaz Lavasani (sopranos), plus instrumentalists Tom Anderson (guitar) and Andrew Nunn (oboe and cor anglais). Alison Gill accompanies on piano and will give a solo recital.

The programme consists of short pieces by Bach, Handel, Mozart, Haydn, Schubert, Rachmaninov and Ravel.

The performers will use the bursaries to help develop their musical careers - by attending advanced lessons, courses and masterclasses, or buying instruments and equipment they would not otherwise have been able to afford. In all, 13 bursaries were awarded by Platform.

Three of the performers are studying music at undergraduate level and two are working as they prepare for postgraduate studies later this year.

The bursary scheme is run with sponsorship from the Majid family of Tall Trees, Yarm. The concerts are supported by match funding from the Sponsors' Club for Arts and Business.

Tickets for the concert, £8, can be obtained by telephoning 01642- 477200 or at the door.

Also tomorrow, at Wynyard Hall, five bands will undertake masterclasses with Ray Farr, conductor in residence at Durham University.

They are Egglescliffe School Brass Band, Tees Valley Youth Brass Band, Lockwood Band, Billingham Band, the Police Band, Marske Band and representatives from Langbaurgh Band.

To end this venture, there is a concert at Middlesbrough Town Hall on Sunday, at 7pm. Tickets are free; call the box office on 01642- 729729.
