From this newspaper 50 years ago. - When a Hunter jet fighter based on Thornaby aerodrome got into difficulties over Teesside yesterday afternoon, the pilot, Flt.-Lieut.
Harry Hood, who lives in the Officers' Married Quarters at Middleton St George, came to ground safely after using the ejector. The plane crashed into marshy ground near Mr J R Hall's farm, Cowpen Bewley, Billingham, but did not catch fire.
The pilot's escape and the crash were seen by two farm workers, 27 year old Thomas Lappin and 17 year old Alan Nelson, who were in the fields. They took Flt.-Lieut. Hood back to the farm in their horse and cart and after being given a cup of tea he was taken back to Thornaby Aerodrome in a police car.
