A NEW arts project in Darlington is seeking people keen to take part in amateur dramatics or group singing.

Darlington Arts Academy, a not-for-profit project run by Melting Pot Arts, operates at Bondgate Methodist Church Hall.

Weekly meetings began earlier this year, and the organisers hope to attract more members. Two welcome sessions for adults will be held next week.

Drama leader Jo Ebberley, said: "Our singing group is made up of people who had little or no previous experience before joining the group but love coming together each week to sing and have a great time.

"The 30 singers have quickly grown into a thriving community, who not only sing together each week but organise social events, trips and want to try lots of new things including drama, which is the inspiration for our new group."

The drama welcome session takes place on Monday and the choir meets on Wednesday; both sessions are from 7pm to 9pm.

Mrs Ebberley said: "No-one is forced to do anything they are uncomfortable doing, and the sessions are a great way to build your confidence. If you have ever hated speaking in front of others at work or simply fancy treading the boards then come along and find out more."

Rebecca McGarvie, director, said: "We meet each week to sing a variety of music including musical theatre, gospel, light classical and popular music and often finish with a drink in a local pub.

"The group are such a friendly bunch they wanted to invite new members to come along, and have even arranged tea and cakes."

Sessions are open to all. Members are asked to contribute £5 each week to attend. To book a place, visit www.meltingpotarts.com or call 01325-262719.
