- A large crowd, including many carpenters and joiners on strike, assembled at Stockton on Wednesday to witness the launching from the Thornaby yard of Messrs Craig, Taylor & Co., of the SS Oratios Couppas, the building of which was commenced before the strike, and has been completed by apprentice labour. The vessel is the third which has been built by Messrs Craig, Taylor & Co., to the order of Mr Nicolas Couppa, of Marseilles.
From this newspaper 50 years ago. - Northallerton people are angry with the Northallerton Urban Council over its decision to end the September fair - the St Bartholomew's fair - which was first established under the Charter of King John in 1200. Already petitions are being raised against the decision and the petitioners claim that the council have been misguided or that members have forgotten when they were young.
From this newspaper 25 years ago. - The Dolphin Centre was officially opened by Sir Roger Bannister last week on the same day that a flag of honour was awarded to Darlington Borough Council in recognition of its town twinning work. The official opening ceremony on Friday was attended by representatives of the council, the Council of Europe, and of Amiens, and Mulheim - the twin towns of Darlington.

The business of Scottish and Newcastle, which bought Theakstons brewery in a controversial move nine years ago, is to be streamlined into four regional companies. consisting of Newcastle Breweries, Courage, John Smith's and Scottish Brewers. The Tadcaster-based John Smith's will take over the operations of T & R Theakston.
