One of the oldest Scouting groups in the country is on the look-out for volunteer leaders to help carry on its work.

Richmondshire was one of the first Scouting groups set up in the UK after founder Baden Powell started the movement while developing Catterick Garrison for the British Army in the lead up to the First World War.

Now after the past few years of Covid-related difficulties, the group is launching a recruitment drive to encourage new leaders to join its work with more than 400 youngsters a week.

District Commissioner Lindsay Sykes said: “Basically we are looking for leaders to help cover the whole age group starting with four year old Squirrels and all the way up to Explorers who finish at 18. It involves some basic training in first aid, safety and safeguarding and then you can do as little or as much training as you want.

Darlington and Stockton Times:

“Being a leader means you get to enjoy the fun of camping, hiking, axe throwing or just simple things like arts and crafts if you prefer. All the leaders are fully supported at all times and there is always someone available to talk to. It’s a place to make friends and watch the young people grow in confidence and experience.

“We have groups in Swaledale, Wensleydale, Barton, Catterick Village, Catterick Garrison and Colburn and Richmond and you would be very welcome to attend any or all to help. After the past few years its really quite important to give the young people of the district some focus and some fun, but we can't do that without some fabulous people to help run the fun. .”
