School children have been given the first round on a nearly completed 18 hole adventure golf course which is part of a regeneration scheme for the seafront at Coatham, Redcar.

Finishing touches are being put to ‘Frosty Penguin’s Putting Adventure’, although an official opening date has yet to be confirmed by Redcar and Cleveland Council.

The adventure golf course is being accompanied by public realm improvements on an area of land on the north side of Majuba Road to the west of the town’s boating lake and Tuned In!

An outdoor play area, picnic lawn and public open space is due to be created on the former R-Kade skateboard site and a portion of the Majuba Road car park, where some car parking spaces will be lost as a result.

Planning permission was given in March last year by councillors for the scheme, which will also see a hundred new car parking spaces being built on the former Coatham Bowl site along with a grassed recreation area, which has just been freshly seeded.

The local authority has been in talks over a potential 5,000 seater arena development on the site, but these have so far not resulted in any option for the land being granted.

The £3.75m plans for Coatham, which have largely been funded by the Tees Valley Combined Authority, are aligned with a proposed 42-bed hotel granted planning permission in 2021, which will include a family restaurant and outdoor seated terrace.

A council spokeswoman said the council was working with the Inn Collection Group on the development, the firm having previously been named as the operator, but said it again did not have a firm date this time for the required spades in the ground which would signal the commencement of the build.

The new adventure golf course is being operated by the owner of Saltburn MiniGolf on the Lower Esplanade at Saltburn and will charge £8 per adult, £6 for juniors and £25 for a group of two adults and two juniors.

A photo shared with the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) by the council shows an overhead view of the course taken using a drone camera.

The spokeswoman said: “We are working closely with the operator to get the attraction open as soon as possible, which will help make the area a fantastic place to spend time with friends and family.”

Youngsters from nearby Coatham Primary School, kitted out in hard hats, were offered a round on the new course by builder Seymour Civil Engineering as a reward for taking part in an educational programme on construction, engineering and safety.

They also helped to name the new enclosed attraction after a competition was held at the school.

Meanwhile, an announcement is expected soon on the latest with a ‘coastal activity hub’ providing facilities and a changing area for people also on the seafront at Coatham to take part in sports activities such as beach volleyball and rowing.

This is being funded separately under the £25m Redcar Town Deal scheme.

Coatham ward councillor Carl Quartermain previously told the LDRS regeneration plans for Coatham were long overdue.

He also claimed Redcar had been “playing catch up” in its efforts to revitalise the leisure offer for visitors, which now includes the new Regent cinema in Newcomen Terrace.

In February councillors also gave the green light for a new family-focused entertainment venue in Redcar High Street which will contain the likes of tenpin bowling, mini golf, laser tag and climbing walls,

The council bought up the former Marks & Spencer building and the adjacent Goodwins property so it could be converted and also separately house the town’s library which is moving from its current location in Ridley Street.

An indoor street, connecting the High Street and the Esplanade overlooking the seafront, is also to be created, which will include a space for public events.

Construction of the new indoor entertainment venue, library and public event space, funded by the Town Deal programme, is due to begin later this year.
