Tory MPs and members of the local Conservative Association came to Guisborough to welcome Lord David Frost for dinner.
Sir Simon Clarke, MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland and Jacob Young, MP for Redcar attended, and guests included Lord Gisborough and Middlesbrough Councillor, Cllr Mieka Smiles.
Lord Frost is a British former diplomat, civil servant and politician and was the UK’s chief negotiator for exiting the European Union under Boris Johnson.
After the UK left the EU in 2020, Lord Frost led the UK’s negotiations with the EU on a free trade agreement during the Brexit transition period. He was created a life peer in September 2020.
He was made a Minister of State at the Cabinet Office in March 2021 but resigned in December 2021, having concerns about the direction of travel in relation to the issues with the Northern Ireland protocol.
In a speech to association members, Lord Frost outlined the path the Government took to achieve Brexit and to form clear red lines. He believed that people were pleased to see somebody standing up for Britain at last.
Afterwards he said: “I’ve been up here a few times. It’s incredibly beautiful but it’s an area, which is clearly on the up. People feel confident and happy. It’s clear as I drive around that there is prosperity and that’s great. That’s what we said we would deliver in 2019 and it is being delivered.”
