More maintenance work has been identified at the swimming pool in Darlington's Dolphin Centre which may push back the re-opening even further - to January next year.
Darlington Borough Council (DBC) has confirmed that the work being done on the popular pool may take longer than expected.
The initial delay pushed the re-opening back to September and this most recent announcement means people may be waiting until January 2024.
Darlington Council is considering an emergency report recommending that opening be delayed again.
When the pool tiles were removed during the work it was discovered that more work would be necessary.
The emergency report says if the pool is re-opened on schedule, it may need to close again for more work in 18 months time.
Councillor Matthew Roche, cabinet member for health and housing, said: "The Dolphin Centre is a much-loved town centre venue for people of all ages and has been for decades.
"However, the building is now well over 40 years old. Like any property of that age, it needs ongoing care and attention to maintain its high-quality facilities.
"The council is investing in the main pool to ensure it can be enjoyed for years to come.
"Whilst I appreciate and understand that people are keen to have their main pool back as soon as possible, the last thing we would want to do is open the pool prematurely, only to see it have to close again for further and more costly repairs within 18 months."
DBC stresses that the water education programme will not be affected by the work and hundreds of swimming lessons can still be provided in the training pool.
There will also still be a temporary pool programme offering lane swimming, water aerobics and family sessions.
The cabinet is due to meet at 9am on August 11 to consider the report to delay opening again.
