The Tees Valley Combined Authority (TVCA) have confirmed a suspected "unexploded WW2 device" was found during excavation work at Teesworks yesterday.

A TVCA spokesperson said the suspected historical ordinance had been found by a contractor doing work in an area near to the site of the former Redcar Blast Furnace shortly after 4pm on Monday (August 21).

They said police were promptly informed and they are assisting them and the Ministry of Defence.

A TVCA spokesperson said: "We were made aware of a discovery of a suspected historical ordinance shell by a contractor carrying out excavation work in an area near to the site of the former Redcar Blast Furnace shortly after 4pm on Monday.

“Cleveland Police were immediately informed and we are working with both the police and Ministry of Defence to provide assistance in line with established protocols.  

"A cordon has been put in place and there is no risk to the wider community.”

Cleveland Police have confirmed they were in attendance at Teesworks in Redcar yesterday (August 21) after a "suspected unexploded World War II device" was found.

The force said: "Police are in attendance at Teesworks in Redcar after a suspected unexploded World War II device was discovered.

"Officers received the call at around 4.30pm (Monday 22 August 2023).

"MOD are also in attendance and will deal with the device safely and accordingly."
