A new app, Discover Darlington, has been launched to teach residents and visitors more about the town's history.

It will take users on a journey through the town centre and cover 14 locations of particular significance.

Some of the important Darlington landmarks are St Cuthbert's church, the market cross and the Joseph Pease statue.

It has been developed by Darlington Borough Council in collaboration with Discover Blackwater.

It is part of an initiative being financed by the National Heritage Lottery Fund to celebrate life around the River Skerne.

The app provides an accessible experience for all with audio commentary.

Cllr Chris McEwan, cabinet member for economy, said: "Darlington is well placed for people to stay when visiting the regions many attractions.

"Trail apps such as this offer a real opportunity for our tourist economy, encouraging people to spend more time in the town, discover local businesses and make the most of our leisure opportunities.

"The app is also a great resource for local people and families, offering a free activity which will help to boost footfall in the heart of the town-centre.

"It also can be used by schools and colleges to bring history to life and acquaint young people with Darlington and all we have to offer."

The app was based on an existing trail leaflet, and heritage research undertaken by The Northern Echo and Darlington Centre for Local Studies.

The app offers people visiting Darlington the opportunity to discover the town and unearth many of our hidden gems.
