The Army has confirmed further details of an incident on Saltburn Beach on Monday (November 20) that saw a section cordoned off after a member of the public found a hand grenade.
Bomb disposal units attended the scene of the incident at the beach, near The Ship Pub, on Monday morning, which saw police and army units close off the area to members of the public.
Emergency services were called in after a report of a hand grenade was reported to Cleveland Police by a member of the public walking on the beach.
Images from the scene showed specialist officers and Army officers, while equipment from an Army van could be seen being wheeled out of vans.
Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council warned the public to stay away from the beach initially - but it has now been reopened after the item was removed from the beach.
At the time, a spokesperson for the council said: "A report has been made this morning by a member of the public regarding a possible hand grenade being found on the Saltburn beach.
"Cleveland Police have been informed and they are investigating the situation.
"We advise residents to avoid the area during this time."
But the Army has now confirmed further details on the incident - saying that the item was a grenade, which was taken away from the scene.
Army units from Catterick Garrison were used during the incident.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence said: “I can confirm that on November 20, 2023, Catterick Troop, 521 EOD Sqn, 11 EOD&S Regt RLC, responded at the request of Cleveland Police to an item of ordnance.
"The EOD team assessed the item and determined it to be a No.36 Mills grenade which was removed from the scene for subsequent disposal action.
"Please direct any further queries to Cleveland Police."
Cleveland Police have been contacted for comment but haven't put out any form of statement so far on the Saltburn Beach incident.
