Police have confirmed that a child who died after he was taken to hospital in "critical condition" from his home in Darlington was a one-year-old baby.

Emergency services were called to Frosterley Drive in Darlington at 9am on Friday morning, and the boy was taken to Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle in a critical condition.

Sadly, the child later died and a man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of murder and a woman in her 30s was arrested on suspicion of causing or allowing serious injury to a child.

A full statement from Durham Constabulary said: "An investigation has been launched into the death of a child in Darlington on Friday.

Darlington and Stockton Times: Frosterley Drive, Darlington.

"Police were called to an address near Haughton Road, Darlington, at around 9am on Friday, January 12.

"Paramedics also attended, and a 1-year-old child was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary. Sadly, the child passed away yesterday afternoon.

"A woman in her 40s was arrested on suspicion of causing or allowing serious injury to a child.

"A man in his 30s was also arrested on suspicion of causing or allowing serious injury to a child, and was further arrested for murder.

"Both have been released on conditional bail while further inquiries are made to establish the circumstances of the death."

Pictures of the home today (January 14) show a small bunch of flowers have been laid at the doorstep in tribute.
