Storm Jocelyn: Three drivers rescued from Morton on Swale floodwater

Fire crews were called to Morton on Swale Bridge at around 5am on Wednesday (January 24), following reports of three vehicles stranded in floodwater. 

The high water was caused by the several days of high winds and rain, brought by Storm Isha and now Storm Jocelyn, which has seen a Met Office yellow weather warning in place until 1pm.

During the incident, firefighters from Northallerton had to wade to the rescue of the drivers stuck in the floodwater.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Northallerton crew have assisted three separate drivers from there vehicles in floodwater after driving into it."

This incident follows a similar incident on Monday (January 22), which saw four vehicles - two cars, a van and a HGV became trapped on the same stretch of road; the A684.

On that occasion, four vehicles became trapped on the A684 when the notorious Morton on Swale Bridge road was overwhelmed for the fifth time in a year.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said five people were rescued from their vehicles along with several dogs.

In the aftermath of the incident on Monday, William Herron said he was called out at 5am to help a friend who was caught up in the A684 flooding at Morton on Swale.

“She said the van had gone off the road because of the flooding, fire and rescue crews got her out of the van with her dogs and I picked her up, she was very shaken up. I came to try and get the van out in my 4 by 4 but it’s too deep we are going to try and get a telehandler.

“It is deep, I haven’t seen it this bad for a few years. This flooding does keep happening at Morton but it is mother nature what can you do.”
