Sevens Struggles
I’m sure we’ve all been keeping up with the Six Nations recently, but on the 21 February Ripon Grammar School hosted their own tournament in which seven schools from across North Yorkshire and beyond arrived at Ripon Grammar School to compete and test their teams.
Rugby sevens is a strenuous test of fitness, technical skills and physicality and the schools involved, Harrogate Grammar, St Peter’s, Mount St Mary’s, Woodhouse Grove, Bradford Grammar, Scarborough and Ripon Grammar, all pushed themselves to the limit to put up a fight and attempt victory. The battles were brutal with constant pushes for tries, desperate defences and each team really giving it their all.
One member of the Ripon Grammar team said “I thought that we faced some tough opposition but put in the hard work necessary for the physical test that sevens is. We had some great passages of play, worked well as a team and came away having made a lot of progress and scoring some great tries”. Another member of the team said, “I think we played well and put up a great fight” while one observer said, “they’re all playing well”.
Ripon Grammar put up a hard fight and had many close games. Meanwhile, the tournament culminated in an epic showdown between Woodhouse Grove and Mount St Mary’s with each team having proven its worth but knowing there could only be one winner. After a hard fight however, Woodhouse Grove took the day and the tournament ended with all the schools confident they had performed their best, but already looking ahead to the next chance to compete.
