Work has begun on the demolition of the former Marks and Spencer and Goodwins building in Redcar town centre.
Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council (RCBC) said work began yesterday - with a temporary road closure in place on one lane of the Esplanade as the demolition of the frontages of both buildings gets underway.
The council confirmed the closure will remain in place until Friday (May 24).
It added the temporary road closure will be lifted once work is completed, while the demolition of the remainder of the buildings will carry on.
A council spokesperson said: “We’d just like to remind residents that the main demolition work on the former Marks and Spencer and Goodwins buildings in Redcar town centre starts next week.
“This is to make way for an exciting new venue for family-friendly entertainment.
“This work has been scheduled to take place ahead of the school half-term holiday and the Redcar Kite Festival on Redcar seafront.
“Local businesses have been briefed on the works. All businesses on the Esplanade and High Street will be open as usual.”
RCBC confirmed the demolition will pave the way for the Culture and Leisure Anchor Attraction development.
The new building will provide a “modern, exciting, and welcoming space for all.”
A council spokesperson added: “The Culture and Leisure Anchor Attraction will enhance the Esplanade and High Street and will provide a space for people to meet, relax and have fun.
“This new family activity centre and cultural hub is to be located all under one roof.”
