Flood alerts are in place in North Yorkshire this morning after a month's worth of rain fell in a day on Wednesday.
Showers will continue to batter parts of the UK today as a yellow warning for rain remains in place for the North East and North Yorkshire.
In a statement, police said: “We can confirm that one person has sadly died as a result of the incident.
“Our thoughts are with their family and friends during this difficult time.”
The Met Office said the area had seen almost a month’s worth of rain in the past day, with 41.6mm of rain recorded over the previous 24 hours in Loftus.
Simon Partridge, a forecaster at the Met Office, said: “The average monthly rainfall for May in North Yorkshire is 57.5mm so they’ve almost had a month’s worth of rainfall today.”
This morning Environment Agency flood alerts are in place for the River Leven in Stokesley, the upper River Swale at Grinton, the lower River Swale from Catterick Bridge to the confluence with the River Ure, the upper and lower River Tees, and Middlesbrough Becks including the Marton West Beck, Newham Beck, Ormesby Beck, Middle Beck and Spencer Beck.
Fire crews were called to scores of flooding incidents on Wednesday. On Faceby Road at Carlton in Cleveland, a crew from Richmond responded to a report of a vehicle stuck in flood water with the occupant on the roof at 2.24pm. Crews located the vehicle but the occupant was not there. A search was carried out and he was found at home.
A crew from Northallerton pumped flood water away from stables housing horses on Thrintoft Moor Lane, Northallerton, just after 1pm, while in Runswick Bay, crews from Robin Hood's Bay and Lythe responded to reports of flood water entering multiple properties at 1.48pm. Crews pumped water away until it reduced to a suitable level for the drains to cope with.
In Saltburn, Cat Nab car park in Saltburn was flooded after Millholme Beck burst its banks.
Videos and pictures showed water pooling in the car park as the beck surged.
One resident said a car remained in the car park while the flooding was ongoing.
One resident said: “Just drove past here Rushpool Road, is bad [there] as well if anyone is going that way.
Another reported that the Cat Nab metal bridge had been cordoned off.
“Just managed to cross wooden bridge at mini railway station, but looks like there's no chance of going back that way. Pub it is then.”
