A life-size knitted version of a Churchill Avre tank has been installed at Ripon Walled Garden.

The tank was crafted over many months by volunteers from the Ripon Community Poppy Project, for the 80th anniversary of D-Day, and aims to promote peace, and community spirit.

Ripon Walled Garden runs services for adults with learning disabilities at its four-acre site, which includes the walled garden, Victorian orchard and woodland.

Stuart Martin,of Ripon Community Poppy Project, said: "We are delighted to be working with the Walled Garden as partners in this educational project.”

Victoria Ashley, chief executive of Ripon Community Link, which owns and operates the garden, added: “We are thrilled to host this incredible installation at Ripon Walled Garden. We hope the community visit to see the tank; this helps us to create an inclusive environment with our members at the heart, overcoming barriers to disability.

"The tank is a powerful symbol and enables us to help to teach our members about D-Day and the war in a meaningful and accessible way.

"As a charity we are extremely proud to partner with Ripon City Poppy Project. It is free to visit our site and the tank."

The garden is open daily on Palace Road, Ripon.
