A new poll suggests the Prime Minister is at 'serious risk' of losing his North Yorkshire seat just weeks after he said he was "confident" he would be re-elected.

It is "too close to call" to say whether Rishi Sunak will hold on to the Richmond and Northallerton seat at the general election on July 4, according to the survey by Savanta.

The pollster's first MRP of this election campaign saw 17,812 UK adults interviewed and projects Labour would win 516 seats, with the Conservatives falling to retain 53 MPs.

Mr Sunak was first elected to represent the constituency in 2015 and when asked by the Northern Echo about his re-election prospects during a campaign launch in Redcar on June 1, the PM expressed his confidence leading up to polling day.

He said: “I’m confident – and we are confident across all of our seats here in the Tees Valley because everyone is delivering.

“They are delivering for their residents and making a real difference in their communities. People can see at this election there is a choice about the future.

“We have made an enormous amount of progress over the past few years with the economy, the plan is working, inflation is down, the economy is growing and wages are rising.

“People want to build on that progress, and they know if you want to move forward you need to have a clear plan with bold ideas – and that’s how you deliver a secure future.

“The choice in this election is clear.”

Rishi Sunak is not the only senior Conservative who is "under threat" according to Savanta, who named former North West Durham MP and party Chairman Richard Holden at risk at his new seat in Basildon and Billericay, Essex.

Other senior figures for which it is "too close to call" include Jeremy Hunt, James Cleverly and Suella Braverman.

YouGov said its latest poll projects Labour to secure 425 seats, the Tories 108, the Liberal Democrats 67, SNP 20, Reform UK five, Plaid Cymru four and the Green Party two.

It noted such a scenario would hand Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer a 200-seat majority while it added Reform UK leader Nigel Farage is “likely” to win in Clacton.
