Weekend walkers were shocked as men with flags and what appeared to be a machine gun climbed Roseberry Topping at lunchtime.

Video circulating on social media appeared to show a group of men including one holding a large firearm and others waving flags, including two which appear to be that of Eritrea.

It happened at the popular spot on the edge of Teesside and North Yorkshire at 1pm on Sunday (June 23).

Police were called by distressed hikers and found the weapon to be a fake.

Officers confiscated the imitation firearm and the men were given “words of advice”.

A Cleveland Police spokesperson said: “Around 1pm today, Cleveland Police attended Roseberry Topping after reports of men believed to be in possession of a weapon. It is believed that a video showing the group was also circulated online.

“Officers spoke with a group of men and confirmed that the weapon was an imitation firearm.

“This has been confiscated by police and words of advice have been given.

“Thank you to everyone who called to make us aware.”
