A monument marking the site of the Battle of the Standard has been badly damaged.

The stone structure dedicated to the 1138 battle between English and Scottish forces is beside the A167 north of Northallerton, but is now laid on its side with damage visible.

It has been surrounded by barriers.

North Yorkshire Council’s head of compliance and facilities management, Paul Fieldhouse, said: “We received reports that the Battle of the Standard monument had been knocked over by a vehicle.

“The structure, which was constructed out of two elements of stone, was damaged and split into its two original parts.

"We are now working with a local stone mason to inspect, repair, and re-erect the monument.”
