A vital Darlington veterans charity has revealed that it will close later this month after battling financial challenges over the last 18 months.

Sporting Force, based at the Recovery and Wellness Centre at 35-36, Blackwellgate, was founded in 2016 by veteran Tommy Lowther at Bishop Auckland College, before moving to Newton Aycliffe then Darlington, to assist veterans by promoting sport and physical activity.

But beyond July 19 this year - the charity says it will wind down its operations "with a heavy heart" after issuing an emotional farewell message.

A statement from Sporting Force said: "The positive impact we have had on the lives of those we served is a source of immense pride. We are deeply gratified by the difference we have made and the countless lives we have touched, enhancing individual well-being and community cohesion.

"However, despite our best efforts, the past 18 months have presented significant financial challenges.

"Funding cuts, decreased donations, and increased operational costs have led to a situation where, despite our best efforts to secure additional funding and reduce costs, we have been unable to achieve a sustainable financial position.

"After careful consideration and thorough evaluation of our options, the board of directors has made the difficult decision to cease operations.

"Our priority now is to ensure a smooth and responsible wind-down process."

Following the announcement, Sporting Forces said that their remaining assets would be transferred to the East Durham Veterans Trust - highlighting that "East Durham Veterans Trust will continue the important work we have started, and we are confident that our assets will be put to good use in advancing their valuable initiatives."

The charity added: "We want to extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who has supported Sporting Force over the years.

"Your trust, donations, and volunteer efforts have been invaluable, and we are profoundly thankful for your unwavering commitment.

"It has been an honour to serve alongside such dedicated and passionate individuals. We remain hopeful that the spirit of our mission will continue through other avenues, inspiring others to carry forward the legacy of promoting sports, fostering community spirit and advocating for a healthy lifestyle.

"Thank you for being an integral part of our journey and making a lasting impact."
