Drivers in North Yorkshire are being urged to stick to official diversions while overnight resurfacing work is being carried out on the A66.

Sections of the westbound carriageway between Scotch Corner and Hartforth are being resurfaced, are currently closed on weeknights to keep drivers and the workforce safe.

Signposted diversion routes have been implemented, however, National Highways project manager Marie Gerrard said: “There has, unfortunately, been an increase in the number of drivers not following these official routes, instead choosing to drive through villages.

"The residents of the villages, local authorities and parish councils are starting to notice the additional traffic build up and this is causing disruption and congestion in these areas.

“We have worked with local authorities and the police to create diversions that are safe and minimise congestion and disruption. It’s vital for everyone that motorists follow these – and not rely on their sat navs. The village routes currently being used as rat runs by some drivers are also unsuitable for some vehicles, in particular HGVs.”

The work is being carried out on this carriageway until Tuesday, August 6, with a temporary 50mph speed limit during the day. The A66 remains open on Saturday and Sunday nights.

Motorists wishing to use the A66 westbound will be diverted up to junction 58 to use the A68 and the A688. HGVs are being diverted in Barnard Castle to avoid the weight restriction at County Bridge.

All work is subject to the weather and may be rescheduled in poor conditions.
