The fundraising appeal to bring eye surgery to the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton has been boosted with a donation of more than £6,500.

The Northallerton branch of insurance firm, NFU Mutual made the donation to the Friends of the Friarage charity, which is trying to raise £200,000 to buy equipment for vireo-retinal (VR) surgery for the hospital's new surgical hub.

NFU Mutual agent, Michael Hilyer got in touch with the Friends to let them know he wished to donate £6,509 from the company’s Agency Giving Fund.

Michael, whose twin sons were born at the Friarage, said: “When choosing where the funds should go I like to have a look around and see who’s doing what in the area, and when I saw that Friends of the Friarage were running an Eye Appeal it was an obvious choice and I’m pleased to be able to help, it will be a great addition to the Friarage.”

A spokesperson for the Friends thanked him for choosing their Eye Appeal, which is currently at almost £50,000.

The purchase of the new equipment will allow patients from Hambleton and Richmondshire to be treated closer to home, rather than travelling to James Cook University in Middlesbrough, as they have to at present.

To support Friends of the Friarage’s appeal, donate directly at www.justgiving.com/campaign/EyeAppeal2024, post a cheque to Friends of the Friarage, Room 47 Admin Building, Friarage Hospital, Bullamoor Road, Northallerton, DL6 1JG or get in touch with them at hello@friendsofthefriarage.org.uk to hold a fundraising event.
