A hospice care charity is urging people to put their best foot forward and take part in a fundraising challenge, The Herriot Hike.

Herriot Hospice Homecare, which supports thousands of people each year facing terminal illness across North Yorkshire, is calling all walkers to join a nine mile hike on what James Herriot himself called the finest walk in England, with one of the best views in the country.

The walk, which starts at Sutton Bank and follows the Cleveland Way, is being held on Saturday, October 5.

The hike is one of the biggest fundraising events being held by the hospice care charity this year.

It has cared for people living with terminal illness at home across Hambleton and Richmondshire for over three decades, and will soon expand care with the opening of Herriot Hospice@The Lambert.

Work is continuing on the new hospice building in the former Lambert Memorial Hospital, in Thirsk. The new facility will provide inpatient hospice care, increased wellbeing support, as well as bereavement support.

Sophie White, events fundraiser, said: “Taking on the Herriot Hike for Herriot Hospice Homecare will support our vital care right here in the community, that can be in the place people call home, surrounded by the people and things that matter most; or at our soon-to-open Herriot Hospice@The Lambert our new, local hospice in Thirsk.

“Each year we help thousands of local people to live life their way, and our personalised care and support focuses on what matters most to the individuals using our services.

“Whether people choose to walk in tribute to someone special, or to challenge themselves, they will be making a huge difference to families living with terminal illness and bereavement right here in our community.”

Entry to the Herriot Hike is £15 per person, with participants asked to commit to raising a minimum of £50 in sponsorship. For details go to herriothh.org.uk.
