A popular Richmond hotel could be converted into single house under plans submitted to North Yorkshire Council.

The Frenchgate Hotel And Restaurant, in Frenchgate, Richmond, currently takes over both 59 Frenchgate and 61 Frenchgate.

Both are individually designated grade II listed buildings.

The application is for the change of use of the existing hotel to a single dwelling. There are no internal nor external alterations proposed, simply the change of use.

Whilst there are six existing members of part time staff at the Frenchgate Hotel, these are to be transferred to The Fleece Hotel in the town centre, which has recently been purchased by the applicant and has been closed for several months.

Therefore, whilst there will be a loss of jobs shown on the planning application form, these are in fact created through re-opening of the nearby hotel and staff are being retained to simply transfer across, documents say.

No.59 is a three-storey property of early to mid-19th century date. It was constructed as a dwelling of four bays, the door being within the second bay.

The property is of coursed stone construction with four vertically proportioned window openings to the first and second floors; three to the ground floor with the door being within the second bay.

All windows are 20th century replacement one over one sashes. The roof is covered with stone slate and there are chimneys to both gables. No.61 is a small two-storey rendered and painted cottage of earlier date, with two modern front doors and altered fenestration.

In terms of impact, there will be less traffic movements and fewer visitors to the property as a result of the change to a house, the application states.
