As public concerns grow about water pollution, a special river education event has been organised.

The Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust (YDRT) is hosting a drop-in event on October 5 from 1pm to 4pm at Gilling West village hall, near Richmond.

The programme includes a talk about the trust’s work and how it looks after the rivers Swale, Ure, Nidd, Ouse and Wharfe along with their catchments. There will also be a guest speaker from Holmedale Nature Network and a film about the work of the community environmental group, Save Our Swale.

The trust’s mobile classroom, branded Rivers2U, with its working rivers table and microscopes, will also be on site.

A bookable guided walk along Gilling Beck with YDRT project manager Sarah Lonsdale and Professor Jonathan Grey from the Wild Trout Trust will offer the chance to look at some of the issues being tackled by the trust.

Sarah Lonsdale said: “The whole team will be at the open event which offers a really great opportunity to find out more about who we are and all the different water improvement projects we have running across the region.

"With a wide range of free activities happening – along with complimentary tea and cake − we are hoping people of all ages will drop in to connect with nature and be inspired by our work.”
