A Darlington man has denied assaulting a woman and baby after they were injured after an alleged incident in a street last month. 

Benjamin Mills pleaded not guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and causing grievous bodily harm with intent during the alleged altercation.

Teesside Crown Court heard how the two victims were the defendant's former partner and their young child.

Police and the ambulance service attended Grainger Road, near Darlington Railway Station, at about 10pm following reports of a disturbance in the street.

The 32-year-old, of Fenby Avenue in Darlington, was arrested following the incident on Wednesday, August 21.

Both the woman and baby were taken to hospital for treatment.

Mills was remanded in custody until his trial on February 12 next year.

Speaking at the time, one resident described hearing a number of police cars arriving and seeing blue lights flashing outside.

They said: "I was just heading to bed when I heard all of the police cars arriving. There were blue lights everywhere. I was very surprised to see the police still here this morning."
