The A1(M) has reopened in both directions after major flooding and heavy rainfall saw it closed early this morning (Wednesday, October 9).
The main motorway route was closed between junction 60 at Bradbury and junction 59 for the A167 to Darlington and Newton Aycliffe.
Pictures from the scene show flood water spanning all lanes of the carriageway.
Motorists reported delays of over one hour in the area, and residual delays are expected to persist through the evening.
A spokesperson for National Highways said: "The A1M in County Durham has re-opened in both directions between J60 (Bradbury) & J59 (Aycliffe) following flooding during a period of heavy rainfall.
"Thank you for your patience, please have a safe onward journey."
An investigation found the flooding to be a result of the sheer volume of rainwater from neighbouring fields rather than any drainage issues.
This afternoon, officers from National Highways worked to remove the floodwater from the carriageway with assistance being sought from the fire service.
