This month’s deserving winner of Richmond’s Amazing Neighbours competition is Julie Mundell, who has gone out of her way to help members of her neighbourhood.
Her willingness to support others has been recognised with a prize of £100 of shopping vouchers.
The Amazing Neighbours initiative is run by the Richmond Yorkshire Community Interest Company, a not-for-profit organisation with the aim of making the town an even better place to live and visit. The scheme’s judges were extremely impressed to learn of Julie’s selflessness in a nomination submitted by her neighbour, Rizz Sisson.
“Julie is the neighbour you can call on anytime,” said Rizz. “As well as being a wife, a mum of two and a community nurse, she is also a very active member of her son’s school PTA. Even within this role, she is always at the forefront of what’s going on and never says no to getting a task complete.
“Julie is always there to help me if I need support, from helping with my children or calling to take the dog for a walk, without being asked.
“Julie has been called up for advice by several people who have been ill. When my elderly neighbour had an accident and badly cut her leg, Julie was there to help while we waited for her family to arrive.
“These are just some examples of the help and support Julie has given. She is definitely deserving of some recognition for what she does, as our Whitefields Neighbourhood Angel.”
The judges are keen to hear about other Richmond residents who make Richmond a better place in which to live. The initiative, which is free to enter, invites people living in the DL10 postcode area to nominate their Amazing Neighbours.
Each month the judges independently score a shortlist of entrants, and they do so without knowing the names of the nominators or those who have been nominated. The scores of the five judges are then aggregated to arrive at a winner. A new Amazing Neighbour is recognised each month and receives £100 in shopping vouchers, with the nominator receiving two free tickets for The Station Cinema. Everyone who is nominated will stay in the running throughout the duration of the campaign.
The Amazing Neighbours judges are: Baroness Harris of Richmond; Chris Brown, CEO at The Station; Richmond School’s headteacher Jenna Potter; Hannah Chapman, editor at the Darlington & Stockton Times; and David Walker, CIC director and chairman of the Richmondshire Refugee Support Group.
Amazing Neighbours has been made possible with the support of local businesses and organisations including Cooper & Leatherbarrow Opticians, in Finkle Street, Richmond; Zetland Estates; Oliviers Furniture on the Gallowfields Trading Estate; North Yorkshire Council; Richmond Information Centre; the Darlington & Stockton Times; Purple Creative Studio and Richmondshire Today.
