Police were called to a Teesside college campus this week after reports of a fight breaking out.

This week, Middlesbrough College has dealt with two incidents at the site, which involved two to three students and saw crowds congregate to watch on.

Reports surfaced online that the school had been put “in lockdown” - although a college spokesperson said a number of “incorrect rumours” were circulated.

Cleveland Police confirmed it was called to the campus at around 2.45pm on Tuesday after reports of fighting, but there was nothing ongoing when officers arrived.

The college said police visited as a “precautionary measure” and that some students were asked to leave to reduce crowds.

Those directly involved have been spoken to by staff - with the two incidents being described as both “unusual and isolated”.

A spokesperson for the college said: “Unusually this week we have had two minor incidents in the college campus area involving 2-3 students, which have been swiftly dealt with by members of the College's security and teaching staff.

“In both instances, large groups of students congregated to observe, which has resulted in a number of incorrect rumours being circulated, and today some students were asked to leave to reduce the crowds. Whilst police have visited the campus as a precautionary measure, no arrests have been made.

“Those directly involved in the incidents have been spoken to by College staff with support or action provided as appropriate.

“It goes without saying that we do not condone any kind of poor behaviour in the College, but we do ask for your help and support to ensure that students do not get involved or observe, but instead, support us in reporting any concerns they have to a member of college staff immediately.

“Whilst these are unusual and isolated incidents, and the majority of our students display exemplary behaviour across our campus, we are taking this matter very seriously and will be ensuring a larger staff presence in the campus areas in the coming weeks.”
