Age UK North Yorkshire and Darlington is urging the community to help spread Christmas cheer to isolated older people.
The charity's Shoe Box Appeal 2024 aims to deliver small gift boxes to individuals who may spend the festive season alone.
This initiative is especially crucial for older people living in isolation, without close family or friends nearby and Age UK wants to make sure they don't feel forgotten during the joyous time of year.
Fay Scullion, the new CEO of Age UK North Yorkshire and Darlington said: "Christmas can be an incredibly lonely time for many older people, especially those without anyone to visit or share the day with.
"By donating a small gift box filled with thoughtful items, you're helping to spread joy and show that someone cares.
"It’s a simple way to make an older person's Christmas brighter."
She suggests filling the boxes with items such as gloves, scarves, hats, socks, toiletries, small treats, puzzles, books, a New Year diary, Christmas decorations, biscuits, or chocolates.
The boxes, no larger than a shoebox, should be wrapped with the lid separately, and a label indicating if it’s for a male, female, or a non-specific gift should be attached. They should remain unsealed, with a band around them for easy opening.
Donations can be made at the Age UK North Yorkshire and Darlington office at Bradbury House, Beaumont Street West, Darlington and the deadline for donations is December 16.
The office is open for drop-offs between 9am and 4pm, Monday to Friday.
Ms Scullion added: "This appeal isn’t just about gifts. It’s about showing our older neighbours that they matter and that we’re thinking of them.
"It’s about spreading kindness and reminding people that even the smallest gesture can have a big impact.
"Just one small donation can make all the difference; to see an older person's face light up when they receive their gift is so heart-warming and rewarding."
