Members of Coverdale WI undertook at 95-mile hiking challenge to mark the group's 95th year.

The milestone was reached on October 31, and as part of the anniversary celebrations, members, accompanied by well-behaved family and dogs walked The Bracken Way, a circular route encompassing much of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

It is split into seven sections ranging from six to 14 miles, and members completed one a month starting in April and finishing in October. A four-mile circular walk in Coverdale was completed for the group's August outing, as their dale was not part of the route.

A spokesperson said: "Amazingly, every stage was completed without rain and mostly in sunshine although it was a bit breezy and foggy at the top of Whernside. This blessing of the weather gods enabled us to enjoy our picnic lunches with breathtaking views notably that from Bucken Pike across to the peak of Great Whernside and down into our home dale of Coverdale and its neighbour Walden.

"The route included steep climbs, but the pain of these was softened by good conversation, quizzes and copious amounts of fruit pastilles. We were also spurred on by the knowledge of beer and an excellent roast dinner waiting for us at the end of each stage. So saddened were we by the prospect of our challenge ending that the group has decided to continue with a monthly hike open to all and perhaps another big challenge next summer."

Their efforts have also seen funds raised for IDAS, an organisation providing support and refuge to women and children affected by domestic abuse. Donations can be made at https://www.justgiving.com/page/coverdale-womens-institute-1715094850606.
