THE owners of the Cornmill shopping centre in Darlington have revealed plans to give it a multi-million pound makeover.
The work – which is expected to cost about £3m – includes modernising the three main entrances and installing an internal traditional-style staircase.
Despite the economic climate, Mark Holmes, of owners the Moorfield Group, said: “We believe that Darlington has huge potential to establish itself strongly as a retail destination and are committed to helping this process by continuing to invest in the Cornmill shopping centre.”
A planning application has been submitted to Darlington Borough Council and, if approved, work is expected to start early next year.
The centre opened in 1992 and the plans are designed to give it a fresh, modern look with striking new entrances at Tubwell Row, Northgate and Prebend Row.
The canopies would be removed and the new design would make greater use of glass. Access between floors would be improved with a new central staircase, and the lift would be upgraded with a new glass surround.
A host of other general improvement works are planned, including a review of the ceiling and lighting in the mall areas.
DLG, an award-winning firm of architects in Leeds, was appointed to draw up the plans.
Subject to approval, work will start in the new year, after the Christmas trading period, and will be phased to minimise disruption for shoppers and retailers.
The centre was acquired by the Moorfield Real Estate Fund for £84.5m in December 2006. It comprises about 50 shops – including major High Street names such as Primark, T K Maxx, Republic, New Look, Top Shop and HMV – and an adjoining 402-space secure multistorey car park.
The first Tesco outlet in Darlington, an Express store, will open soon in the former Rymans Stationers and Au Naturale ground-floor spaces, at a cost of £69,950 rental per year.
