THE Wensleydale Creamery is restoring an historic milk supply after a 25-year gap.
It has secured a deal with three farms in neighbouring Coverdale to supply it with around 3m litres of milk a year.
The dale is one of the Yorkshire Dales identified within the Hawes-based creamery’s application for Protected Designation of Origin Status.
The Coverdale milk will be used in the production of Real Yorkshire Wensleydale Cheese.
WN Avison and Sons, of Middle Fields Farm, Melmerby, will be the first farm from Coverdale to supply the Wensleydale creamery since the closure of the Coverham creamery in 1984.
The other two farms in the dale – CS Uttley and J Pearson – will start supplying the creamery from November.
Andrew Avison, who has a 150-head Friesian dairy herd, said: “We like how The Wensleydale Creamery operates, with its commitment to and support for family farms in its surrounding area.
“It is great that Coverdale milk is once again being supplied to a local creamery and will be going into producing Real Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese, which has such a strong pedigree.”
