The establishment of the motor bus service has been of the greatest advantage to all classes in Thirsk, seeing that it has reduced the cost of a ride to the junction from sixpence to twopence.

From this newspaper 25 years ago. – The Fountains Abbey Appeal is expecting a healthy boost to its funds next month when walkers take part in a sponsored pilgrimage to the famous ruins near Ripon. The National Trust is now more than half way to its appeal target of £1m to restore and preserve the Abbey and the 680 acre estate it acquired from North Yorkshire County Council last year. Work is nearing completion on one of the biggest projects, the dredging of the lake at Studley Royal.

The action group Friends of Saltburn Pier wants public backing in time for a visit by lottery board members. The Friends want more members and a commitment to subscribe £5 a year to impress lottery officials in advance of a new bid for cash to restore the crumbling pier.
