THE Archbishop of York has helped a village church mark a centenary of worship there.
Dr John Sentamu visited All Saints’ Church, East Cowton, on Sunday to lead the service.
The church was founded in February 1909 when a memorial stone was laid and the first service was held there in February 1910.
The congregation has a year-long series of events lined up to mark the anniversary starting with the visit by the Archbishop.
Jean Dennis, who writes for the parish magazine, said: “We were very honoured that he came to visit and he’s a lovely man.
“He first visited East Cowton Primary School to open a new classroom extension and play area.
“Then he led a procession to the church where he led the service and his sermon charged us to bring a friend to worship. We had a very good day and he was really friendly and chatted to anyone who spoke to him.”
