A PILOT project converting cooking oil into biofuel is under way at an Army base.
Vegetable oil from the kitchens at Catterick Garrison is being converted on the base into biodiesel for use in vehicles. If it proves successful, the scheme will be expanded to other military bases.
The project is being overseen by Defence Estates and its partners, Carillion Enterprise and Carillion Planned Maintenance.
On average, 50 litres of biofuel is being produced a week, saving about £2,000 per year.
Tom Robinson, managing director of Carillion Enterprise, said: “This is delivering real value on the military estate in a sustainable way.”
