The Swaledale Tournament of Song will shortly be held at Thirsk for the first time in its history. The tournament is hitherto alternated between Richmond and Northallerton.
From this newspaper 50 years ago. – Of the six motor-cyclists killed in County Durham during the first three months of this year, five were not wearing safety helmets. This fact – plus the countrywide increase in accidents involving motor-cycles, scooters and auto-cycles – emphasises once more the need for greater care among this section of the travelling public.
From this newspaper 25 years ago. – Plans to close Ripon Hospital operating theatre have been approved by the Harrogate Health Authority, despite massive local opposition. Around 8,000 people signed a petition to save the operating theatre, but at a meeting in Harrogate on Wednesday, members of the authority voted overwhelmingly to go ahead with the planned closure.
From this newspaper 10 years ago. – Sickened campaigners witnessed the final chapter in the fight for Nunthorpe library this week. All hope was dashed as books were taken from the building which was closed as a library last year.
